July 5, 1946: First bikini introduced in Paris by Louis Reard and Jacques Heim. It was named after the Bikini Atoll, where atomic bomb testing was being done -- it was assumed that public reaction would be similarly explosive. Since no professional model would take the job, nude dancer Micheline Bernardini was hired to model the new swim suit.
