PELE VISIT NIGERIA DURING THE BIAFRA WAR 1969

PELE in Nigeria January 26th 1969.

Tony Igwe Captain of the National Team Green Eagles of Nigeria, this time against Santos FC of Brazil featuring a certain Pele (r) at the Onikan Stadium Lagos-1969, score- 2-2, following a previous battle between Nigeria and Brazil at the Mexico City Olympics 1968, which ended in a 3-3 draw!





This team featured some of the greats of Nigerian football of the 60's- Paul Hamilton, Sebastian Brodericks, Augustine Ofuokwu- (who all later coached the National team), Segun Olumodeji, Kenneth Olayombo, Peter Fregene and Sam Opone.

Majority of the Team members were drawn from probably the greatest team of the era- Stationery Stores of Lagos- The Flaming Flamengoes.

Pele's visit was so momentous that both sides to the Nigerian Civil War agreed a 48-hour ceasefire during its course. Santos also played an unplanned match against a Mid-Western Nigeria 11 in Benin on February 4 1969, facilitated by Col Ogbemudia- the Military Governor-which Santos won 2-1.
