MADAM MARY NZIMIRO

Born Mary Nwametu Onumonu on October 16, 1898, in Oguta. She attended Sacred Heart School in Oguta and a Convent , briefly, from where she married politician Richard Nzimiro in 1920. She started her trading business in Port Harcourt in 1921, selling produce.

She expanded Rapidly, till she became the UAC’s biggest agent in Port Harcourt. At the peak of her Business in the 1940’s, her annual turnover was in excess of £150,000 per annum She organised co-operatives for women, giving them assistance in setting up their own Businesses. She was a politician and activist, famously bank-rolling her husband’s successful Mayoral bid In Port Harcourt in 1951. She is said to have been one of the first Igbo female Millionaires. She passed away in 1993.
